The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine is the founding institution of a National Medical Center, a pilot institution of the national program for high-quality development of public hospitals, the National Medical Center for Infectious Diseases, the lead institution of a national regional general medical center, a pilot hospital for building and improving a modern hospital governance system, and a participant in the pilot project of flagship hospitals for integrating Western and Chinese medicine.

The hospital ranks 6th in the country overall; 8 of its specialties are in the national top ten, with infectious diseases and gastroenterology ranked 1st in the country; and it ranks 5th nationally in the cumulative five-year science and technology index.

The hospital has 1 national key laboratory, 1 basic science center of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 1 national clinical research center; it is a national base for the treatment of severe infectious diseases and carries out tasks under the national program for improving diagnosis and treatment capabilities for complex diseases (intensive care track).
